The National Music Theater Conference's Submission Guidelines


APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must be American citizens or residents with current visas
  • Works by both individuals and collaborative teams are accepted
  • Both original and adapted works are accepted
  • Proof of rights for adapted works NOT in the public domain must be included with application
  • Works under option by a producing theater or an independent producer are accepted, provided this is stated in the application
  • Works that have already received a fully staged professional production MUST receive approval prior to applying
  • Works of any length and all forms of music theater in which singing plays a dominant role are accepted; however we do not develop works intended for young audiences, or plays in which music is incidental or minimal
  • Works do not have to be completed to apply as long as the minimum requirements for submission are available
  • Works that have been previously submitted are acceptable, as long as significant work has been done on the project since the last submission
  • Names of authors and composers do NOT have to be removed from materials submitted
  • A completed and signed application form must be included with materials sent
  • Additional materials or information may be requested during the selection process
  • CDs do not have to be of professional studio quality; piano accompaniment is sufficient but all vocal selections must be sung
  • We do not accept cassettes or videotapes

EARLY SUBMISSIONS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED
Applications must be postmarked ON OR BEFORE December 1, 2007
Application materials will not be returned

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

  • Creative artists of works selected are invited to be in residence for a period of two to three weeks during July and/or August each summer; all creative artists must be in residence for the duration of time the work is developed and presented
  • Creative artists receive a stipend, room and board and round-trip transportation
  • The development process includes daily rehearsals, several public script-in-hand readings, and ongoing discussions with the Artistic Director and artistic staff
  • Private and informal meetings are held during the Conference with invited professionals in the field
  • The O'Neill Theater Center provides all works in development with a director, music director and a company of Equity performers
