Wendy C. Goldberg is in her third season as Artistic Director of the National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Wendy is the first woman to lead the Playwrights Conference in its 43 years. Under her leadership, and in the great tradition established by Lloyd Richards, plays from her past two summers have moved directly into significant world premiere productions in New York and to theaters across the country. In the last two years and this upcoming season, O'Neill projects have premiered in New York at The Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, 59E59th, and regionally at Denver Center Theater Company, Alliance Theater Company, Long Wharf, Woolly Mammoth, Florida Stage, and Victory Gardens. In the last three seasons, new partnerships have been created internationally with Ireland's Abbey Theater as well as the Druid Theater to support the work of an Irish playwright at the conference, and domestically with Alliance Theater's Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition and The Goodman Theater in Chicago to support the work of an emerging playwright. This season Wendy will direct Wendy Wasserstein's THIRD for Denver Center, a co production of DOUBT for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Actors Theater of Louisville, and the world premiere of Mark Schultz's DEATHBED in a commercial production off Broadway. Other recent directing credits include: THE SWEETEST SWING IN BASEBALL, THE CLEAN HOUSE (Denver Post Ovation Award for Best Direction and Best Production) and LIVING OUT (Denver Center), the world premiere of FALSE CREEDS (Alliance Theater), THE CHOSEN (Actors Theater of Louisville),and the world premiere of A MARRIAGE MINUET (Florida Stage). Wendy has directed in every major new play development program in the United States, including work with Playwrights Horizons, New York Stage and Film, New Dramatists, The Women's Project, Arielle Tepper Productions, Fox Theatricals, The Mark Taper Forum, Portland Center Stage, Woolly Mammoth, Ojai Playwrights Conference, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Florida Stage. For five seasons Wendy served as the Associate Artistic Director at Arena Stage in Washington, DC where her directing credits include, THE GOAT OR WHO IS SYLVIA?, PROOF, BOOK OF DAYS, ON THE JUMP, and the revival of K2 for the theater's 50th anniversary. Wendy led downstairs in the Old Vat Room, Arena's artistic initiative dedicated to the development of new American plays, since its inception. In the downstairs program, she directed and developed new work by over 50 playwrights including Pulitzer Prize winners, Beth Henley, Wendy Wasserstein, Robert Schenkkan, Marsha Norman, and Pulitzer nominees Sarah Ruhl and Christopher Durang. Her work has been highlighted in Variety, The New York Times,The Washington Post and American Theater Magazine where she was described as "one of the most promising theatre artists working today". Wendy sits on the Executive Board of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and has served on selection panels for The National Endowment for the Arts, Playlabs, and The Gerbode Foundation. Wendy has guest lectured in graduate Directing, Playwriting and Management Programs at Brown University, UC-San Diego, Indiana University, The Iowa Writers Workshop, Columbia and The Yale School of Drama. She is a graduate of The University of Michigan where she studied comparative literature and theatre, and holds a MFA in Directing from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television.
